Throughout history lavender has symbolized love, affection, cleanliness, purity, chastity, protection, longevity, and peace. It is has been long said to help tone, sooth and promote the skins healing process, and is a well known natural antibacterial. The name Lavender is derived from the Latin word 'lavera' to wash. Ancient Egyptians held it in high regard, using it to produce soothing and healing ointments and perfume. Lavender was commonly used in Roman baths to scent the water, and it was thought to restore the skin. As the Great Plague swept through France, many were intrigued that those working in lavender factories were untouched, and so survivors strew Lavender about the floor to disinfect and wore it on their bodies and clothes for protection. English Royalty has valued lavender for centuries, having it on their table, tea, pillows and baths. And Cleopatra, according to legend, used lavender to seduce Julius Caesar and Mark Antony.
